Preview of Spring — When to Bring in Your Bulbs, Grooming and Staking

For HYACINTHS:
We recommend taking your bulbs out of cold storage and into your homes around February 11-12.  If you follow the forcing schedule that Mary Jo gave us at the October 20 workshop, you will see that you need about 10-12 days under the 65 degree column, counting backwards from our Preview Submission Date which is February 29. Mary Jo recommends about 5 days for “wiggle room” with the timing of the blossoms because it is easier to slow down the blossoms from being at their peak (by putting the plant in your garage– cooler temperatures but with daylight!) than it is to force them to open.  It takes about 2-3 days for them to bloom at their peak once the buds start to open.  Rotate the plants to the source of light so that they grow evenly.
